i'm almost ready to give up trying but i know that i wont. so i ask.... am i not good enough? not qualified? or is a mason selected & the coin phrase to be 1 ask 1 something to throw off the unwanted? i know my quest is not for the wrong reasons but for the sincerest longing to be a part of something that is bigger than me. im not looking for a status jump in life or society but if it makes a good man better than i'm all for it.
so if someone can provide me with insight or can shed some light on the proper way to go about becoming a mason i'd be forever in your debt. thanx 4 reading & responses in advance.

I'm new myself - have been a Master Mason since only April, but would be delighted to get to know you, work with you, and help you find your way to what we call the West Gate of a Brooklyn Lodge as a candidate for admission. Each Grand Lodge, which governs the lodges within a particular jurisdiction, has its own rules and ways of going about this, but the recommendation of one or more Master Masons is required.
After a period of getting to know you (in my jurisdiction it is a minimum of six-months) a Mason would then determine if he would sign your petition. If you'd like me to help, though I live in Utah, I could find a Lodge close to you and work to find a Master Mason in that Lodge who would be able to meet with you, get to know you and potentially become your proposer or nominator.
Drop me a note on this site and we can figure out how to get you started.

See if the lodge(s) that you are interested in has a web site. E-mail the lodge secretary requesting information for petitioning. You may want to inquire if the lodge holds events open to the public such as dinners, fish fry, etc. that you may attend. When I contacted my lodge to petition, my e-mail was forwarded to the lodge secretary who invited me to a fish fry to meet and talk with brothers from the lodge.
Good luck,
Jim Peterman

The responses from Brothers Tibbitts and Peterman are sound advice. Also, go to www.mastermason.com, look up the Grand Lodge of New York's website, and locate a local Lodge. Then contact a local member. Lodge Secretaries usually post their email addresses.
Good Luck,

The advice provided by my Brothers was great and accurate. You may also attempt to contact the Grand Lodge of New York and enquire about their Friend to Friend Program and find out when the Lodge nearest to your residence is holding a Friend to Friend meeting. Once you are armed with the date for the Friend to Friend meeting or evening, contact the Lodge secretary and ask for an invitation or tell him that you are interested in attending. At the Friend to Friend meeting you may ask for a Petition for Initiation Form and then see who will sponsor you.
I wish you the best of luck and hope and trust that my advice will assist you in becoming a member of our ancient and honourable order. Good Luck in your journey!
Be well!

And remember, to some degree, each lodge has its own flavor and focus. Some are more active in county/district/state events, some are more locally involved, some lean towards education... visit several near you (if possible) for meals and fund raisers, and see where you feel most comfortable.

I never gave up trying & i have been accepted into the fraternity as of 03/22/08!!!!! i was almost brought to tears of joy that day, finally having been accepted amongst brothers.
Thank you all so much who have left a note of guidance & support & best wishes.
So in closing for now, best wishes to all & know that i intend to contribute more to the forums in the very near future.

Just out of general interest would you be kind enough to give us an insight into your reasons?
What do you believe Freemasonry is?
Why do you want to be one?
There is no obligation upon you to reply to this reply if you prefer to answer similar questions privately, after you have petitioned a Lodge.
Without knowing you and what motivates you towards Freemasonry it is difficult to guide you to a Lodge that might suit your aspirations.
