Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

My apologies to you brethren as well, if I've offended any.

Again, my disdain for vulgarity comes not so much from religious principle, as it does from my father's desire that his kids develope refined speech and intelligence, and that is all.

Well, Shadrack420, being a renegade and a rebel has its place and time, and don't think for a minute that I've not been one or both of those things in my lifetime, because I would be lying if I told you otherwise.

Cheers,

Eric

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

We are neither renegades nor rebels. We simply differ with you on several philosophical issues.

Now we can keep fighting with one another or we can be tolerant and Masonic of each other's ideology and opinions. I'll let you decide and will interpret the tone of your future posts as an answer.

People need to be free to decide what is right for them. I hope we can all agree on that point as Americans.

We will always be a smaller organization because it takes approximately four to six years to become a Master Mason in Grand Orient Masonry (both in the USA and France).

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

Jeff,

Let not continue to fight, it does neither of us any good, and it's a waste of our time truthfully speaking.
Truthfully, I think we are all by nature renegades and rebels, but that is why we are taught to keep our passions 'within due bounds.'
Let's be tolerant and Masonic about each others differing ideologies and opinions, shall we?

I agree, we should be free to decide what we shall do for ourselves, that's liberty and I support that in the fullest sense of the term. Live free, or Die! is my motto.

Grand Orient Masonry? I've never heard of this before, unless you're referring to the United Grand Lodge of America that has now changed its name to the Grand Orient of America. So, just what is Grand Orient Masonry? I've heard of Antient and Modern, and Regular, but not this one. Please provide some details.

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

"Grand Orient Masonry" is a term used to describe the Masonry that developed in France during the eighteenth century. It is also commonly referred to as "liberal and progressive Masonry".

Sometime in the 1730's the Grand Lodge of London (est. 1717) chartered a new Grand Lodge in France that eventually became known as the Grand Orient of France. This form of Freemasonry is based primarily on two concepts: absolute freedom of conscience and laicite. Both of these ideas were derived out of the European Enlightenment and the American and French revolutions. (Wikipedia has a lengthy article on Laicite.)

Grand Orient lodges operate as a confederation where the lodges are more or less sovereign. Each lodge is free to choose their own symbolic rituals from among the many different rites. Under the Grand Orient there are numerous Rites as opposed to there being only York and Scottish in US GL Masonry.

GO Masonry tends to focus on education and esoteric teachings. You are required to write papers on various subjects before passing from one degree to he next. These papers are referred to as "Architecture".

Things progress very slowly in GO Masonry. For instance it takes about 20 years to become a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

There is no requirement to believe in a supreme being in GO Masonry. Everyone is afforded absolute freedom of conscience. Ironically, Grand Orient Masons tend to be far more spiritual, mystical and esoteric than there western counterparts. (I know this seems illogical but it's true. For instance the most esoteric and arcane Rites are practiced by some GOdF lodges.)

It's a very different kind of Freemasonry that's not for everyone. While it's the most popular form of Masonry in France and several other European countries, it's hardly known in the USA or England.

The Grand Orient of France has had lodges in the USA since the founding of the country. The earliest ones were in South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. Today they are primarily located in the largest US cities such NY, SF, LA, etc.

The Grand Orient is a male only body, but it has open fraternal relations with mixed and all female bodies.

Grand Orient Masonry isn't better or superior to any other form of Freemasonry; it's just different. Some people gravitate towards it while others don't. It has the same historical lineage as the UGLE (it was started by the Grand Lodge of London). Both Benjamin Franklin and Marquis de Lafayette were members of the Grand Orient. Franklin was actually present at the raising of Voltaire, and served as Venerable Master of the famous Lodge of the Nine Muses.

I think that covers the basics pretty well.

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

Jeff for the past year the two big buzz words have been the Modern / Antient systems. How do these relate to GO Masonry / Current USA Masonry?

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

The Grand Orient of France is the only remaining body of Moderns. The UGLE is a mix of Antient and Modern, and the US Grand Lodges are Antient.

This is easily determined by their rituals.

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

I know there are numbers all over the place for Antients but how many Modern Masons are there around the world today?

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

That's difficult to determine because there are so many small Grand Lodges. Some of them are all male, others all female, and some mixed. The best estimate I've come across is around 250,000, but that may not be entirely accurate. The problem arises that the Modern Grand Lodges/Orients tend to be quite liberal and allow the lodges to choose their own rituals. Some of these lodges choose Antient or Emmulation rituals.

From the Grand Lodge perspective we could say 250,000, but at the local lodge level no one has a clue. I would venture a guess that there are probably around 125,000 Masons practicing true 'Modern' rituals, as put forth by the Grand Lodge of London in 1717. That, however, is just a guess.

Re: The Green Dragon Tavern Redux

Brethren,

Here is a poem that recentlhy wrote that expresses how passinate I feel about our great Fraternity and that for which it stands, I should hope you will like it.

I've entitled it "A Heaven Sent Message", may it be thus to you all.

Sincerely,

Bro. Eric Martin aka Witnessofjesus

A HEAVEN SENT MESSAGE

When the wages of war are raging, and the costs is millions of lives,
God, in His Infinite Wisdom, often looks down from the skies.
He sees His sons and daughters fighting, waging war in His name,
So He sent down from Heaven some lessons which have now gain worldwide fame.

The lessons of which I have spoken, are often concealed in plain view,
they're available to all men in free lands,
and concealed in their hearts each day anew!
They are the lessons of Brotherhood, under the Fatherhood of God,
and with these glad tidings we are prepared to spread this glad message abroad!

War, ravaging and death, do not have to last endlessly,
This is the message that we teach to each initiate anew,
for with God as our Father in Heaven, and a message of peace in our hearts
we can learn to act with mercy and benevolence we can choose to impart.

These are some of the lost lessons, as taught in our ancient Fraternity,
who chief message to the world is Brotherhood, and who each gladly bend the knee!
With each solemn oath we covenant, to help, aid and assist,
both brother Master Masons and all who such as shall our assistance implore,
and we as upright men and Masons are obliged to assist them even more.

We are to teach the children, the bright hope of this our homeland,
the lessons of charity, relief and truth,
as each week we meet in this sacred band,
to implant the message in each new heart and new hand
that comes humbly seeking the light that we have to offer to them,
those noble souls who at the West gate succeed in knocking,
and are allowed to enter in,
it is in these new youths and brethren that our message will spread throughout the land!

With each new song we are singing,
the message will spread far and wide,
til each new heart will be singing
the message that we do not have to hide!

This message is one universal and all encompassing plea,
that we each respect each others beliefs, and learn to live in liberty!
It has long been in plain view, in many small towns throughout this land,
where one will see on many a sign posted, a welcoming sign to their land,
posted with the symbol of our ancient Order, the Golden Compasses and Square,
having been put there by many a small country lodge farm hands,
to welcome all those who are traveling through their small country town,
each seeking to assist in spreading this glorious message around.

Often we hear of racial divides, even within our own brotherly Band,
such should not be, my dear Brethren, as we have the light that shall stand!
Let no racism exists amongst us, it is our duty to teach,
that as a world-wide Brotherhood, we do not regard a man after the color of his skin,
but look down deep inside and judge a man from within!

When we return to our heavenly abode,
after traveling here far below,
it will be refreshment so sweet,
as we shall again meet with those who have gone this way before,
we have carried on in our cause of spreading our Brotherhood abroad,
and in teaching each man, woman and child about the Fatherhood of our God.

Each will be held accountable for the hand that they choose to play,
in spreading this message of freedom, equality and liberty for all each and every day,
And when the Supreme Grand Master above shall call us home, from our toils here below,
Won’t it be great to stand at that Gate knowing we have such a benevolent Friend?
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, He it is Who will let us in!

From the heart of Brother Eric James Martin, a Master Mason from Lynnhaven Lodge No. 220, 56th Masonic District of Virginia, and also a member of Freedom Military Lodge No. 1775 of the District of Colombia.
