Portrayal of Freemasonry in film

I watched "From Hell" last night, but saw it in a new way. The first time that I saw it I was not a Mason yet so I did not really notice too much. However, this time was very different. So much just jumped out at me. It was somewhat disturbing to see the first part of the penal clause from the EA ritual for all to see and hear, despite the fact that it was off somewhat and incomplete. It's true that in England in 1888, as now, many high ranking police were and still are Freemasons. So what? It's unfair that police in England should have to "register" that they are Freemasons because some biased and unprofessional asshole wrote "The Brotherhood." Worse yet, some police officials were fired simply because of that fool book and that they were Freemasons. Do other groups have to register too? I think not.

Of course, Masons were painted with an evil brush. There's a surprise! Better ratings and profit for all if we are more sinister. Less boring too. Was Jack the Ripper a Freemason? Yes, that is probably true although I am not sure if we can be 100% certain on that fact. That he was given a Masonic trial should actually still be in the records though. Moreover, that should show that such heinous acts were not sanctioned at least by the Freemasons. But the film portrays that several high ranking police officials, all Freemasons, conspired together to perhaps murder those 5 prostitutes or at the very least look the other way until after they were all killed simply because they knew too much. Truth or fiction? Freemason sanctioned or were they working on their own?

I certainly agree with you about the prejudice being shown against British Freemasons who hold governent position and employment. Very offensive.

For a more positive treatment of Masonry in film, watch "The Man Who Would be King", if you have never seen it. A great film, epic story, giants of actors. Michael Caine said it was his favorite film of all the ones he did.

You don't go to them. They come to you. There are rights, privileges and obligations.

So I managed to find the time to watch From Hell last night. It was a very well made movie. Rather disturbing, but I honestly don't feel it represented the craft as being as bad I thought it was going to. That being said I'm still having a hard time buying in to the conspiracy theory that was presented.

Re: Portrayal of Freemasonry in film

My Brothers,

My family has been freemasons for at least 4 generations that I can find clear documentation in our family records including masonic bibles and regalia, but I have not found a single one to be part of the grand consipracy, darn it.* I have one eminent Grand Commander, 2 Most Worshipful Grand Masters, a bunch of High Prists, Commanders and Masters, but not one single illimaniti. A Potentate, but all he did was build little cars and attend parades. Lots of charity work, but not one single lynching or tar and feathering or any other crime.

This leads me to the belief that either 4 generations of my family were dupped and missed the entire "power to steer the world" gambit, or it is just a load of horse poop. I think I am going to go with the horse poop theory.

The idea behind freemason bashing is making money because it has done that for so many people in the past. On the surface, Masons are a fraternal group, which since I have been a member for a pretty long time and seen them for my entire life, is what they are under the covers as well. The old ways of being secretative are fairly thin today. If a man wants to know what masons believe he can find the information. If he wants to understand the ritual, he can find it. We try hard to tell ourselves the "secrets" are there but there are no secrets in this world of ours.

S&F,

In my experience, all true secrets keep themselves.
