It would be nice if "our leaders" would have the courage to run with something different, but an idea that is also democratic and consistent with Masonic principles. When personal power is more important to GL officers (or any Mason) than the good of Masonry we are in deep trouble. Sometimes they forget that they represent US and the organization in said jurisdiction and beyond. Keep in mind that Masonry is alive and well outside the United States and that those Masons would like to be as involved in decision making as everyone else.
Having a Masonic Grand Jury from time to time unfortunately is necessary, but shows us all that certain GL officers are not doing what they are supposed to be. They are putting power and their own ideology first and ignoring Masonic process. Such a Grand Jury should only be used when the Masonic process has been ignored and abused in such a way that it has caused harm not only to that jurisdiction, but to Masonry in general. eg. New York Times article on M.W. Bro. Haas and the GL of West Virginia A prime example. | |

Like you I don't see why the help was such a surprise since MWBro Haas has been a friend all masons, and included in that are PH Masons.
If you wish to understand, at least MWBro Haas point of view, please read the post titled "http://www.thebluelodge.org/masonic_news-184/brother_frank_hass_address_to_the_philalethes_soci ety_feb_2008-13491/"
He explains what happened and why.
